Interview with Maryia Amrez, our placement student.

07 December 2016

Following last year’s ‘Keeping Talent in Yorkshire’ event at Bradford University and my susbsequent interview to join Sterling Corporate Finance for my industry placement, I was excited to start work   August 1st.

Andy, Lyndsey and the rest of the team made me feel very welcome and, entirely as I expected,  I quickly realized that I was there to do a real job of work and not merely to shadow.

Highlights so far include a trip to London to assist in a pitch to a prospective client – a very different experience to presenting to my student peers. I was given a great deal of responsibility and was instrumental in providing much of the in-depth analysis for the pitch. I must say that a slight detour at Kings Cross station to view Harry Potter’s Platform 9 ¾ was hugely enjoyable, and given that it was the crack of dawn, there were no huge queues!

Another aspect of the placement which I am particularly enjoying is the opportunity to build up personal relationships with our clients. This allows me to gain an understanding of their many and varied businesses and the highs and lows they have experienced along the way.

The lowlight of the placement year has without a doubt been the constant early morning starts and the frustrations caused by our not-too-wonderful public transport system; I hope for a mild and snow-free winter!

Trains not withstanding, I am having a great year, learning a lot and I am looking forward to the next few months. I’ll keep you posted!
